Cíle předmětu
The course will follow each of a series of short novels of Anthony Powell’s roman fleuve ‘A Dance to the Music of Time’, focusing on Powell’s realist preoccupations both with depicting the nature of a specific English class fraction (the upper-middle class) and exploring character to an unusual and extended degree. In addition to providing course participants with consideration of these elements, the course will consider the novels’ approach to close to fifty years of twentieth century British history.
Výstupy z učení
Students who have completed the course should have gained a more detailed understanding of British establishment life, the course of British history in the twentieth century, and a more complex appreciation of the contingencies and insights provided by Powell’s primarily realist approach to character in the context of his roman fleuve.
