Cíle předmětu
The aim of this course to impart the skills and knowledge required for qualitative field research in China as well as among the Oversease Chinese communities with focus on participant observation and conduction of interviews.
Výstupy z učení
After completing the course, students will be able to - develop their own research project based on the methodological framework of participant observation and conduction of interviews - evaluate and determine sources for their own project - demonstrate their ability to compile, assess, and analyze information.
Osnova
  • The main topics which will be covered in this course are as following: 1. theoretical framework of "doing fieldwork" 2. theoretical approach to the three formats of interviews: structured, semi-structured and unstructured 3. preparation for fieldwork and interviews 4. analyzation and transcription of interviews 5. conducting fieldwork & interviews 6. development of research project 7. presentation of research design
Výukové metody
In the first part of the course, the students will gain theoretical knowledge on doing fieldwork and on the various formats of interviews. In the second part, the students become researchers themselves and develop their own small ethnographic research project among a Chinese diasporic community. The students will go together with the lecturer into the “field” to get a first-hand experience of conducting fieldwork. (Friday, April 8, all day – participation is mandatory). Students will then develop their own research which will be presented in the end of the term, a small internal “conference” (May 17, 10:00-16:00, participation is mandatory).
Metody hodnocení
1)Active participation throughout the term, 2) involvement in discussion on the various reading assignments, 3) development of a research project and its presentation during the “conference”
