Cíle předmětu
The following questions will be discussed during the seminars. Are root morphemes distinct from affixes? If so, what are their unique properties and how should be the roots represented in a theory? At the end of the seminar, the students will be able to differentiate between the lexicalist and transformationalist approaches to the generative grammar. They will also acquire knowledge of how the modularity hypothesis can be implemented into a theory. The communication between the lexicon and the morphosyntax will be emphasized
Osnova
  • The seminar intends to bring up a discussion on roots from the perspective of different research programs: nanosyntax, distributed morphology, minimalism. Each of the theories is represented by a talk of a particular speaker.
  • All talks take place from 14:10 till 15:45 on Mondays in November 2017.

Metody hodnocení
By 27 November 2017 at the latest, a one-page final paper (in English) should be delivered to A. Poludněv. In the paper, the students recap the seminars. Particularly, they need to address the questions mentioned above. Given each particular theory, are root morphemes distinct from affixes? If so, what are their unique properties and how are the roots represented in the theory? If not, which principle of the theory allows such a statement? On 4 December 2017, there will take place a colloquium where the final papers will be discussed.
