Cíle předmětu
This course chief objective is to give students basic understanding of Chinese art of the Song and Yuan period (10th to 14th cent.) . • At the end of the course, the students should be able to to distinguish artifacts from distinct periods; • analyze a variety of particular works of art; • work with information on other objects produced in East Asia; • create a reasonable aesthetic judgement; and • make reasoned decision about an unknown artifact´s value. • Gradually, students should be able to make their own deductions based on acquired knowledge, once they are confronted with a relic or artifact similar to those which had been explained in the class.

  • Introduction to the issue: Chinese terms & transliteration, geographical and historical setting. • Archeological discoveries from the Liao territory • Northern Song literati painting and calligraphy • Emperor Huizong • Wooden architecture • Imperial tombs of Northern Song • Ceramic kilns of Song, Liao and Jin • Buddhist art, the caves at Dazu• the genre painting and Qingming shanghe tu • The revival of painting under Southern Song • Religious art under Yuan, caves near Hangzhou and wall paintings at Yongle gong • the court portraiture • the international trade in ceramics • literati painting of Yuan period •

Metody hodnocení
There may be a short cognitive test each week. • Readings from recommended materials will be presented by all students, and discussed in class. • The course is concluded by a test (2/3 have to be answered correctly).
