- The course is taught in the Czech language, and no knowledge of Latin is required. Admittance is widely open for students in humanities (e.g. aesthetics, history, classics, philosophy).

- Course objectives
- Aim of the course is to learn Augustine´s aesthetics as a part of the History of Aesthetics and a part of the European scholarship as well.
- Learning outcomes
- On successful completion of the course, students will be able to interpret Augustine's work in the framework of the History of Aesthetics and Culture, and also in the perspective of synchronic and systematic approaches [semiology, structuralism, philosophy of language].
- Syllabus
- St. Augustine was not only a theologian. He contributed to Aesthetics, Philosophy of Language, Theory of Laing, Ethics, Rhetorics and many other disciplins. His texts will be closely read and scrutinized in seminars without duplicating the general overview by Karel Svoboda: L'Esthétique de Saint Augustin et ses sources, Brno-Paris 1933. - Teaching methods
- Every lecture requires homework preparation in reading the assigned study literature. After teacher's presentation of the general and particular features of the subject, students are guided to interpretation of the chosen extracts, and class discussions follow.
