Anotace
This course is designed primarily for students of Chemistry and Biochemistry. It aims to introduce students to topics closely related to their disciplines and to use these topics as a basis for further developing grammatical accuracy, expanding subject-specific vocabulary, and improving writing skills in line with the conventions of academic English. The course focuses on the development of communication skills, including discussions, paraphrasing, and scientific presentations; listening comprehension through popular science videos and podcasts; reading comprehension through popular science and academic texts; and, to a lesser extent, academic writing skills
Výstupy z učení
After completing this course, students will be able to:
  • use an extended range of discipline-specific vocabulary in context;
  • apply selected grammatical structures in academic and professional contexts;
  • identify the main ideas of specialist texts;
  • understand authentic specialist texts;
  • use key language functions in English, including defining, describing processes, comparing, and explaining cause-and-effect relationships;
  • orally summarize the main ideas of specialist and popular science texts;
  • understand authentic spoken English on specialist topics;
  • discuss both general and field-specific topics.

Přístupy, postupy a metody používané ve výuce
The course is taught in English and employs the following approaches: communicative language teaching, task-based teaching and discovery learning. It is learner-focused and encourages students to practise autonomy, i.e., being responsible for their own learning. The tasks and activities may include: pair/group discussions and debates, mini projects (presentations, practical writing tasks, recordings), games and self-directed grammar and vocabulary work.
Způsob ověření výstupů z učení a požadavky na ukončení
Students are expected to participate actively in class, collaborate on team tasks, complete homework assignments, and maintain at least 80% attendance. To successfully complete the course, all assessed course requirements must be fulfilled.
Náhradní absolvování
In case of a study trip abroad, it is possible to complete the course in an alternative form. The course requirements, such as continuous tasks, can be delivered upon arival.
