Study-related information

  • Final state doctoral examination and defence of the doctoral thesis
    The student shall pass the state examination until the end of the fourth year of his/her study in case he/she has met all his/her study obligations.
    For dissertation defence, it is necessary to submit the dissertation dossier in the volume of 240 to 360 thousand characters and the dissertation thesis, and to prepare a presentation that summarizes the research project crowned by the dissertation and that takes about 10 – 15 minutes. The defence is held before a disciplinary commission.
    The state doctoral examination consists of dissertation defence and student's answers to questions put from wider thematic groups (1. methodology of the discipline; 2. historiography of the discipline; 3. realia of historical forms of traditional culture, its current forms, and ethnical processes and identities). The state examination is to verify student's capability to take part in a professional debate within ongoing discourse of the discipline, and his/her potential to be well versed in theoretical and methodological concepts applied in the discipline and realia ethnology deals with.
  • Requirements of the study
    The student is obliged to systematically work on his/her own scholar project (dissertation). In his/her dissertation, he/she submits original results of his/her own research. The dissertation must substantiate his/her professional competences to implement, treat, and present the results of the ethnologic research and its appropriate support in methodology.
    The supervisor leads student's professional preparation, and within consultations he/she inspires and methodologically directs student's activities in the realm of source study and field research, preparation of text, articulation of theses, and dissertation.
    Within common basic subjects, the doctoral student is to attend two one-semester subjects in philosophy, and a chosen foreign language.
    During his/her study, the doctoral student must attend all the subjects included in the category “Obligatory Subjects” (within them, 145 credits are linked to the preparation and implementation of the dissertation); up to the minimum quantity of 240 credits for the whole study, he/she chooses from the offer of obligatory facultative subjects (however, at least 20 credits). Within the subject “Doctoral Course” he/she is to present, once in the study (mostly in the 6th or 7th semester), the theses of his/her research task and partial results at an advanced stage (scope of 20–30 minutes).
    Within obligatory subjects and after a consultation with the supervisor, the doctoral student shall take part in a study stay abroad, he/she shall develop his/her publication activity, and participate in conferences at home and abroad.
