This study examines whether participation in EU Cohesion Policy (CP) grant projects improves the financial performance of beneficiary firms and how firms perform when they meet the objectives set in funded projects. We analyze Slovak companies that received CP support by combining Cohesion Policy funding data for the 2007–2013 and 2014–2020 programming periods with firm-level financial statements and additional firm characteristics from the Slovak Statistical Office. To account for non-random selection into funding, we use propensity score matching to construct a balanced sample of funded and non-funded firms with comparable pre-treatment profiles, and we estimate the Average Treatment Effect on the Treated (ATT) by comparing post-award outcomes across matched groups. In a second step, we assess firms’ fulfillment of project objectives and employ fractional logistic regression to identify the determinants of project success rates.
