The American War of Independence (1775–1783), sometimes also called the American Revolutionary War, was a war between the Kingdom of Great Britain and the thirteen colonies in North America. The encounter ended with the defeat of Britain and the recognition of the independence of the United States. In the introduction, I will briefly try to capture what preceded this historical event and why it happened at all and in the conclusion I will explain the differences between the army of the future United States and the Royal Army of His Majesty. The main basis of this thesis will deal mainly with the army and its auxiliary forces plus allied troops with a connection to George Washington himself, as the main icon of the so-called Continental army. Furthermore with origins, soldiers, ranks, equipment, supply routes, training, operations, tactics, places, battles and local skirmishes.
