This Master’s thesis focuses on contemporary science fiction written by African American and Caribbean female authors. It examines the works of Octavia E. Butler and Nalo Hopkinson and their construction of the utopian/dystopian world where the pressing issues of race, gender, and/or class are revisited. The main theoretical approach in this thesis is Black feminism, but it also employs theories of postmodern thinkers such as Donna Haraway or Frederick Jameson. As exemplified in Butler’s Kindred and Lilith's Brood and Hopkinson’s Brown Girl in the Ring and Midnight Robber, both authors preoccupy with the position of black woman in the society, either real or fictional, and her self-determination based on race, gender and sexuality, or class. I argue that they challenge the normative character of those concepts and de-essentialize them. In this way, Octavia E. Butler and Nalo Hopkinson propose a utopian/dystopian fictional world where the troubled position of black woman would be resolved once and for all. Since African American and Caribbean science fiction is slowly gaining recognition in the North American literature, the aim of this thesis is to contribute to the discussion of this genre by demonstrating its potential for subversion of contemporary society.
