The extant literature shows that education and income are among the strongest antecedents of the tendency to endorse conspiracy theories (CTs). In recent years, however, more attention was put into how subjective experience of financial hardship or the sense of precarity contribute to the endorsement of CTs. The new evidence indicates that, regardless of actual financial situation, the sense of living in precarious conditions significantly contributes to the increase in conspiratorial theorizing. The aim of the study is to investigate whether (and how) the subjective appraisal of an individual’s financial situation, the perception of current economic conditions and prognoses about the future economic development could enhance people’s vulnerability to CTs and lead tounfavourable decisions of those who fall prey to conspiracies. In cooperation with the supervisor, a student will design empirical studies, collect, analyse and interpret the data. Alternatively, the thesis could be prepared based on available datasets (e.g., EU-SILC, ESS, WVS). Additionally, the thesis involves review of the relevant extant literature on economic antecedents of the endorsement of conspiracy theories and negative consequences conspiracies may have for individuals and economy (e.g., healthcare system).
