Of interest to translation studies at large and, specifically, to audiovisual translation, are references to concepts originating in a culture ("realia"). Naturally, the concepts are not known universally, prompting various creative translation solutions of their references to accommodate for the foreign culture recipient. When translating fiction, however, one is bound to encounter a respective equivalent - references to concepts from fictional cultures or even worlds. These "irrealia", as Loponen (2009) refers to them, come with their own challenges. In this thesis, I will examine how these challenges are addressed in video game translation. I want to find out if strategies typically used for realia appear in translation of irrealia and whether there is a tendency to domesticate (bring closer to the target audience) or foreignize (retain the original style) the irrealia. One of the main criteria is choosing a game which is not obscure but at the same time not a part of a larger fictional universe. The point is to ensure that its translators could not have referred to solutions created in the past by translators of media from the same franchise.
