- Course objectives
- Students become known with the core concepts and theories on understanding the interrelation between organizational culture and the approach of social workers to their clients. On successful completion of the course student should be able to interpret their own knowledge about their own practice in social work as social construct and as an element of the culture of specific organization.
- Syllabus
- The course is devoted to the following topics and issues: 1. Basic concepts: „social work services“, „organization“ a „culture“, „dilemmas of the work with clients “, „Ways of coping with dilemmas“ and „approach to clients“ as a an element of organizational culture.
- 2. Managing uncertain working conditions (by Lipsky).
- 3. „Double bound”, “participant” and “observer” perspective (by Laan).
- 4. The power of managers and professionals in organization (by Howe).
- 5. “Collective unconsciousness” (by Tavistock Institute of Human Relations).
- 6. „Keeping frames” and the “learning organization theory“ (by Argyris and Redmond)
- 7. Research on the approach to clients in terms of organizational culture.

- Teaching methods
- The learning outcomes of the course will be attained by means of following teaching methods: 1. lectures, 2. reading, 3. writing essay, and 4. group feedback concerning the essay.
- Assessment methods
- The course is completed by exam which consists in test and essay on „How used to social workers in selected organization cope with their selected dilemma and what is the meaning of the way of coping in their eyes?”. 1. Test on concepts and theories in approaches to clients as dimension of organizational culture consists in four non-standardized questions. Student can gain maximum 4 points for each of them. To be successful student has to gain 9 points. 2. Essay is assessed in terms of following abilities of student: a) identifying specific dilemma of social workers working on practice site of the student, b) defining indicators of the dilemma, c) applying indicators in interpretation of the way workers of selected practice site deal with the dilemma. Student can gain maximum 30 points for test as well as for essay. In sum, student can gain maximum 60 points. To finish the course successfully student has to gain minimum 40 points.
