Course objectives
The qualitative strategy currently offers a large number of research approaches and methods that differ from one another by different theoretical orientations. Researchers tend to have a qualitative strategy in trouble with the justification options specific research methods and approaches in relation to the theme and cognitive problem. The aim of the course is to enable students to understand the different theoretical orientations of qualitative research. Another aim is to practice students in a logical and theoretical justification for choice of methodology research dissertation.
Learning outcomes
Student will be able to complete the subject;
- describe important features of the main theoretical approaches to qualitative research;
- Compare important differences between these approaches;
- write an essay assessing the selected qualitative research method in terms of the theoretical orientation.
Syllabus
  • Basic features of qualitative research strategy. Qualitative data and qualitative research methods. Validity and credibility of knowledge.
  • Strategic Issues in Qualitative Research: Inductive Analysis and Creative Synthesis, Holistic Perspective, Contextual Sensitivity, Triangulation and Reflexivity
  • The importance of theory and two main theoretical trends in qualitative research. Inductive analysis in positivism and critical realism. Social constructivism and constructivism, their individual traditions.
  • Phenomenology and ethnomethodology. Basic concepts of phenomenological sociology of A. Schutz and its methodological implications
  • Heuristics and hermeneutics. Basic concepts of hermeneutic interpretation of H.G. Gadamer and their methodological influences
  • Discursive analysis. Basic Concepts of Discursive Regularity M. Foucault. and their methodological implications
  • System theory and theory of complexity in organizational and program research by M. Patton and their methodological implications for Graunded Theory.
  • Preparation of a seminar essay on the theoretical orientation of selected methodology of qualitative research.
