Abstract
The aim of this course is to deepen knowledge of the European Union and its legal system, with a particular emphasis on the internal market.  The course covers the fundamental freedoms of the internal market, in particular the free movement of goods, persons, services (including the freedom of establishment) and capital, as well as competition law. An integral part of the course is the acquisition of specialised terminology in this field. The main objective of the course is to provide students with a solid understanding of the legal framework governing the activities of the European Union.
Learning outcomes

After completing the course, the student:

  • understands the basic structure and functioning of European Union law, in particular in the area of the internal market;
  • is able to explain the content and purpose of the fundamental freedoms of the internal market (free movement of goods, persons, services, and capital);
  • is familiar with the system of EU competition law regulation;
  • understands the significance of European Union citizenship and its legal implications;
  • is able to describe the basic functioning of the Schengen Area in the legal context of the EU;
  • understands the relationship between EU law and the law of Member States;
  • is able to identify and analyse current legal issues within European integration;
  • is familiar with the position of selected Member States (in particular the Czech Republic and France) within the institutional and legal framework of the EU;
  • uses basic specialised terminology of EU law, including in the French language.

Competences


The student acquires in particular the following competences:


  • the ability to interpret primary and secondary EU law in the basic areas of the internal market;
  • the ability to apply EU law to model and practical situations;
  • the ability to assess the compatibility of national legislation with EU law;
  • the ability to work with the case law of the Court of Justice of the European Union;
  • the ability to identify relevant legal issues within European Union law and to address them in a legal manner;
  • command of basic specialised terminology of EU law in French, the ability to work with specialised legal texts in a foreign language, and the ability to formulate legal argumentation in French;
  • the ability to critically assess selected institutions and mechanisms of European Union law;
  • the ability to present legal issues using appropriate specialised terminology;
  • the ability to work with legal texts in seminar discussions;
  • the ability to formulate legal arguments.

Approaches, practices, and methods used in teaching
The course consists of a lecture part (in Czech) and tutorials (in French). Within the tutorials (travaux dirigés), the teaching methods include the solving of model and practical case studies, the assessment of the truthfulness of statements, work with the case law of the Court of Justice of the European Union, argumentation and discussion of case studies, group work and individual work. The seminars are also supplemented by frontal instruction by the teacher with explanations of key information.
Method of verifying learning outcomes and course completion requirements
Continuous assessment during the semester (seminar paper or solving a practical case). Points for in-class activity. Oral examination (solving a practical case, discussion with the instructor or other students) with defence of the continuous assessment work.
Alternate completion
An individual study plan is possible. Self-study, solving case studies, preparation of a seminar paper, and consultations with the instructor. The examination is conducted under the same conditions for students without an individual study plan.
