- Course objectives
- At the end of the course students will know pharmacological characteristics of analgesics, anti-inflammatory drugs, anticancer drugs, local and general anesthetics, psychotropics and antihypertensive agents, anticoagulants and thrombolytics, antibacterial, antiviral and antifungal agents. Students will be able to prescribe ready made preparations.
- Learning outcomes
- Students will know the principles of drug prescription. They will be familiar with pharmacological profiles of therapeutic and adverse effects of particular drugs with an attention paid to drugs used in dentistry.
- Syllabus
- 1. ANALGESICS, PHARMACOTHERAPY FOR GOUT
- Basic pharmacological characteristics of opioid and non-opioid analgesics, antihypertensives, and antimigraine drugs.
- 2. PSYCHOPHARMACOLOGY I
- Basic pharmacological characteristics of drugs from the antipsychotic group, treatment of neurodegenerative diseases (especially Parkinson's disease and dementia), overview of psychostimulants.
- 3. PSYCHOPHARMACOLOGY II
- Basic pharmacological characteristics of antidepressants, hypnotics and anxiolytics, including analgosedation. Overview of anticonvulsants.
- 4. GENERAL AND LOCAL ANAESTHETICS. MUSCLE RELAXANTS
- Basic pharmacological characteristics of general and local anaesthetics. Premedication before general anaesthesia. Adverse effects of local anaesthetics. Central and peripheral muscle relaxants.
- 5. ANTIBIOTICS + TEST I
- Pharmacological overview of antibacterial drugs, FK/FD parameters and their influence on the choice of antibiotics, mini-case studies. Prophylactic administration of ATB in dentistry.
- 6. ANTIMYCOTICS AND ANTIVIROTICS
- Pharmacological overview of antimycotics and antivirotics. Interaction potential of selected anti-infectives. Anti-infectives used in dentistry.
- 7. ORAL CAVITY MEDICINES. ANTISEPTICS. DERMATOLOGICAL MEDICINES.
- Revision of drugs for the oral cavity, including antiseptics. Revision of the basic properties and mechanisms of action of selected groups of drugs, overview of representatives, dosage forms for application in the oral cavity and overview of adverse effects in this area. Brief overview of dermatological drugs: summary and repetition of the groups covered, including the main representatives.
- 8. ANTIHYPERTENSIVES + PRESCRIPTION TEST
- Pharmacological overview of antihypertensive drugs. Drugs affecting the RAAS and diuretics, vasodilators, beta blockers, central antihypertensive drugs. Self-study: Lipid-lowering drugs, anti-obesity drugs.
- 9. DRUGS AFFECTING HEMOSTASIS. INOTROPICS, ANTIARRHYTHMICS.
- Pharmacological overview of drugs affecting haemostasis and drugs with positive inotropic and antiarrhythmic effects. Self-study: Antianaemic agents.
- 10. CYTOSTATICS AND TARGETED THERAPY IN ONCOLOGY + TEST II
- Overview of cytostatics and targeted oncological drugs, adverse effects of cytostatics.

- Teaching methods
- Drug classes specifics from the Syllabus are read firstly by the teacher and followed by discussion and training of drug prescription with the use of drug compendia.
- Assessment methods
- Participation in practicals is obligatory and registered. To get credits a student has to pass 3 written tests: one on drug prescription (assessed individually by the teacher), two multiple-choice tests on knowledge of topics taught.
