Course objectives
To introduce students with - the factors affecting laboratory test results and their interpretation - principles of proper collection and processing of biological material - the evaluation of the validity of laboratory tests - basics laboratory diagnosis of selected diseases.
Learning outcomes
After this course, the participants will:
- be familiar with biochemical tests suitable for diagnostics of selected diseases
- be familiar with the basic problems of common biochemical diagnostic tests
- know how to correctly collect and handle biological material to prevent false results
- be able to assess the reliability of laboratory results
Syllabus
  • Biochemical tests - variability and reliability of the result, specificity, sensitivity, validity, reference limits, uncertainty, ROC curves. Preanalytical influences on laboratory examination.
  • Diagnosis and monitoring of nutritional status. Principles of parenteral and enteral nutrition. Energy sources.
  • Energy expenditure, nitrogen balance. Oxygen, transport and oxygenation disorders. Load states, energy balance.
  • Disorders of lipid metabolism.
  • Biochemical markers in cardiology.
  • Management of water and mineral substances. Serum and urine osmolality.
  • Acid-base metabolism. Examination indications, interpretation of parameters.
  • Importance of determination of Na, K, Cl.
  • Biochemical diagnosis of kidney diseases, their monitoring. Functional tests. Urinary sediment. Hemodialysis.
  • Biochemical examination of the liver and bile ducts. Manifestations of damage, differential diagnosis of jaundice, cholestatic syndrome.
  • Clinical biochemistry of the gastrointestinal tract. Gastric secretions, resorption disorders and intestinal diseases, pancreatic function tests.
  • Disorders of glucose metabolism, diabetes mellitus.
  • Metabolism of essential trace elements.
  • Biochemical examination of the pituitary gland, thyroid gland and adrenal glands.
  • Calcium and phosphate metabolism. Markers of bone metabolism. Vitamin D.
  • Tumor markers.
  • Blood serum proteins. Acute phase reactants. Monoclonal gammopathy.
  • Biochemical and morphological examination of cerebrospinal fluid.
  • Inherited disorders of metabolism; congenital metabolic defects; newborn screening.
  • Peculiarities of laboratory investigation in childhood.
  • Vitamins.
