Abstract
At the end of this course students have basic knowledge of ethiology of dental caries, its classification and prevention. Students understand relations between other fields of dentistry regarding prevention of caries and periodontal diseases and use them practically. TThe course also includes a nutrition module, which focuses on expanding and consolidating knowledge of nutrition in the field of dental hygiene, and a module providing an overview of medicines and other products applied in the oral cavity, particularly for the purposes of dental prevention. Students attend a seminar on preventive veterinary dentistry.
Learning outcomes
At the end of the course, students will: 1. Be able to detect suspected dental caries clinically and using imaging methods and correctly inform the treating dentist of their findings. 2. Measure the KPE index and be able to compile a cariogram. 3. Know the principles of fissure sealing. 4. Be able to examine or participate in the examination, always on the recommendation of a dentist, of patients with a focus on cancer prevention and iatrogenic damage. 5. They are able to educate patients on nutrition in the context of dental prevention. 6. They have an overview of medicines and other preparations applied mainly for prevention in the oral cavity and know the principles of handling them.

1. Dental caries – diagnosis – clinical examination, X-ray – appropriate projections and evaluation of X-rays, DIFOTI, infrared laser fluorescence, and other imaging methods. 2. Nutritional protocol and cariogram, determination of dental caries risk, recommendations for the patient 3. Management of cariological patients, including practical implementation of local fluoridation and fissure sealing. 5. Comprehensive examination of patients with a focus on oncological screening and prevention of iatrogenic damage. 6. Overview of medicines and other products used primarily in the prevention of oral diseases. 7. Principles of communication for dental hygienists – healthcare professionals – in the media and on social networks when educating and informing patients about dental hygiene and dental prevention. 8. Nutritional counseling in the field of dental prevention: Basics of nutrition I – macronutrients (proteins, fats, carbohydrates), nutritional recommendations; Basics of nutrition II – micronutrients important for hard and soft tissues of the oral cavity), food labeling; Nutritional aspects of dental health (main nutritional factors in the development of dental caries, gingivitis, and periodontitis), food labeling; Critical reading – evaluation of an article on nutrition and dental health.
