Course objectives
The main objective of the course is to develop speaking, reading, writing and listening skills at the Upper-Intermediate Level (level B2 according to CEFR). The basic study material is the coursebook Outcomes Upper - Intermediate supplemented by various additional materials. Throughout the semester students are encouraged to link theory in the classroom to practice at schools via practical tasks. At the end of the course students should be able to: discuss everyday topics, communicate in everyday situations, read and listen to authentic texts at the Intermediate Level and communicate in the language fluently.

By the end of the course the students will: - develop speaking, reading, writing and listening skills at the Intermediate Level (B1 according to CEFR);

Syllabus
  • The basic study material is the coursebook Outcomes UPPER-INTERMEDIATE, see Literature bellow. The syllabus includes Units 5-8, topics: Sports and Interests, Accommodation, Nature, Crime and Punishment. The focus is on speaking and listening activities and development of students' vocabulary.

Assessment methods
Maximum number of points received during the semester: 200; Pass mark: 140 points; 1) Students need to pass final written test focused on vocabulary, grammar, listening, reading covered during the term: 80 points (passmark is 70%, two re-sits are offered); 2) Oral exam proving overall grammar and vocabulary knowledge: 60 points (students gather points that are added to the total sum of points, oral tests do not have resits); 3) Placement test: 10 points (first class in the semester); 4) Progress test: 10 points (midterm); 5) Other types of continuous assessment based on homework and active participation in the seminars: 40 points; Students have to prepare for lessons throughout the whole term and do homework for each lesson, which is the base for their active participation in the seminars. Most of the work is based on students' self-study.
