Course objectives
Particular attention will be paid to the interpretation of selected pieces of prose and poetry for children and young adults. Students will get a deeper insight into genre specifics, will be able to analyze a literary work and relate it to the specific nature of literature for children and contemporary literary trends. Through analysis and interpretation of selected pieces of literature, the seminar offers students a more thorough understanding of Czech literature for children and young adults. When analysing the texts, students notice the basic characteristics of the style of individual periods as well as outstanding personalities. This seminar draws upon the compulsory seminar in literature for young adults.
Syllabus
  • Working independently students will focus in particular on reading and interpretation of contemporary works of Czech and world literature for children and youth and their position in the literary context. The programme of the course will be specified in the first week of the term.

Teaching methods
Students will get an insight into the basic trends of literature for young adults in the respective period, as well as into the specific nature of the poetics of individual literary movements. They will be able to identify and analyze the style of outstanding personalities, significant for a particular period. Students will further develop their literary knowledge and interpretational skills with the aim to communicate with a literary work more efficiently. They will creatively use their knowledge gained not only in the classes but also in their individual study of recommended literature which they will be able to discuss regularly with their teacher.
Assessment methods
Completion of the course: The course requirements include three interpretational analyses of assigned works from the field of literature for children and youth (each being 2-3 pages long); the assignments must be submitted to meet the deadlines which will be announced in the first week of the term.
