Abstract
The aim of the course is for students to gain an overview of the key milestones in the history of culture in our region and, in this context, of certain important aspects of European culture. Individual periods are presented with basic information on their style, whilst the course is further enriched by an examination of social changes and, above all, the relationship with, use of, and transformations of the landscape. The course is not intended as a comprehensive introduction to the history of world culture. The aim is to draw students’ attention to key moments, changes and social contexts within local and European cultural history. The course provides students with a general cultural overview that future teachers of civic education and the fundamentals of the social sciences should possess.
The course presents the various historical periods using specific examples from the city of Brno.

Learning outcomes
Students will be able to identify the main cultural periods that have occurred in our country. They will be able to characterise their main formal features and differences in content. They will be able to briefly describe the social and cultural development in our country.

  1. An Introduction to the History of Culture and the History of Culture within the Education System; UNESCO; Czech UNESCO Heritage Sites
  2. The town and the monastery: the Early Christian and Romanesque periods; the Gothic period
  3. Faith in God, faith in humankind: the Renaissance and Baroque periods
  4. City and nature, reason and emotion: the Classical and Romantic periods
  5. The World and the Nation: The 19th Century
  6. Turbulent Modernism: The 20th Century, Which Is Not Easy to Define
  7. Summary lecture: In one city (Brno example)

An oral examination based on information from lectures, the interactive syllabus and the prescribed reading list.
Alternate completion
Students on a study placement will agree on an individual study plan with their lecturer. Course completion is governed by faculty regulations.
