Course objectives
Chapters in the Syntax of Czech language 2 follows Chapters in the Syntax of Czech language 2. There are explained the approaches to the analysis of the compound sentence in the Czech syntax (F. Trávníček, F. Kopečný, K. Svoboda, M. Grepl, P. Karlík, J. Hrbáček and other). It is presupposed student after finishing the course:
1. Students know the terminology of syntax concerning complex and compound sentence;
2. Students can use knowledge of terminology in analysis of compoound and complex sentence practically;
3. Students know some syntactic theories concerning compound and complex sentence and text.
Syllabus
  • 1. Criteria for the differentiation between sentence and compound sentence, sentence and complex sentence.
  • 2. Sentences connected in the compound sentence. Connectives (word category, syntactical function, meaning). Complex sentence.
  • 3. Types of the compound sentence. Juxtaposition. Co-ordination. Complex sentence. Subordination.
  • 4. Sentence and clause in complex sentence. 5. Co-ordination. Types of the semantic function of the co-ordination, the connective of the co-ordination.
  • 6. Subordination.
  • 7. Relation between proposition of the clause and sentence in complex sentence. Clause in the valence position of the predicative verb in the sentence.
  • 8. Classification of the clauses in the complex sentence, criteria of this classification.
  • 9. Compound sentence and complex sentence in the Czech grammars and syntactical studies.
  • 10. Sentence in the text. Sentence as communicative units. Segmentation of the text. Units of the texts, relations among them.
  • 11. Structure of the text. Connective in text, meaning and function of them.
  • 12. Connectives, types of them. Function of the connectives.
  • 13. Functional perspective of the sentence and the structure of the text. Thematic-rheumatic relations in the text.

Assessment methods
Lecture
Ending: Credit Credit requirements: Master of knowlege and practical application of them in analysis of complex sentence and compound sentence (see syllabus).
The knowlege and ability will be proved by written exam at in the end of the course.
To be succesfull student has to solve 80 % of the objectives of the written examination.
