Course objectives
The main objective of this course is to discover the most frequent word formation patterns of German, to describe them and compare with equivalents in other languages. At the end of the course students know how to find the word formation patterns according to their frequency and structure. They are able to analyse and describe them and to comment how they can be revealed in texts. As the students have to do research on context bound lexical units, they also acquire these units in chunks. Students of this course also gain knowledge in using the parallel corpus InterCorp and the German corpus DeReKo.
Topics for the summer term 2016: The most frequent compounds of German nouns (ending with -tag, -jahr, -mann, -uhr etc.), German derived words and their context and counterparts in other languages.
Syllabus
  • German word formation: a brief survey
  • Statistics of German
  • German compounds and their counterparts in other languages
  • Discussion on the most frequent compounds with several basic words and their chunks (students´ papers)
