Abstract

The course will explore the origins of monasticism and religious life, the role of religious orders and their monasteries in medieval society, daily life in a monastery, and the most significant figures in religious life, such as Augustine Aurelius, Thomas Aquinas, and others. Students will learn about the spiritual life, spirituality, and economy of monasteries, as well as the role of religious orders—particularly the Jesuits—in the early modern world. Detailed attention will be given to their educational activities and their contribution to the tradition of pilgrimage. The course will analyze the impacts of secularization during the Hussite Revolution, the 16th-century Reformation, Josephinism, and the totalitarian regimes of the 20th century.

Learning outcomes

Students will be able to understand the origins, classifications, and characteristics of monastic life; they will be able to describe the role of monasteries in medieval and modern society and in the cultural world, as well as in Czech and global church history.
