Abstract
The course present chapters from traditonal social culture as primary space of life of man. It focuses on everyday manifestations in whole community context in past, but also finds continuing manifestations in contemporary society.
Learning outcomes
At the end of the course students should be able to: define social culture; identify the manifestations of social culture; interpret materials in ethnological context, describe traditional and contemporary rituals from the holistic point of view; formulate the possibilities of research of social culture; compare the development of different societies.

  • 1. General introduction to social culture (tripartite division of traditional folk culture).
  • 2. Basic issues of evolution, terminology (matrilocality, patrilocality, polygamy, polyandry, polygyny, initiation, transmission rituals, etc.).
  • 3. Family and types of family in historical development (nuclear family, large family).
  • 4. Matrimony and forms of marriage.
  • 5. Wedding and wedding ceremonies.
  • 6. Birth of people.
  • 7. Last things of people.
  • 8. Annual cycle festivities and holidays.
  • 9. Rituals, traditions and festivities connected with crop and harvest.
  • 10.Religious year and traditions. Christmas. Easter. Pentecost. The cult of saints as people’s calendar.
