Course objectives
The course is aimed at introducing students to the principles of safeguarding intangible cultural heritage at the international and national levels. In individual lectures, the principles of the UNESCO Convention for the Safeguarding of the Intangible Cultural Heritage, which is binding for the Czech Republic and directly translates into the practice of cultural institutions, will be presented. The lecture will enable students to understand what is hidden under the term intangible cultural heritage, what threatens it, how it can be cared for and how the institutional system of care for this area of culture works. They will also get acquainted with the tools of safeguarding intangible cultural heritage and the possibilities of their application at the national and international levels. The mechanism of application of international instruments of care and the possibilities of their further development will be illustrated with elements from the Czech Republic and abroad. The course includes a mock elaboration of a “domestic” nomination of a cultural phenomenon that shows the prerequisites for institutional care.
Learning outcomes
After completing the course, the student will be able to identify a cultural expression that is suitable for inclusion in the programme for safeguarding. At the same time, the student will gain the ability to describe the expression, analyze it in the context of cultural and social development and create a formalized presentation for its nomination to specific lists of intangible cultural heritage. The teachers of the course are ethnologists and selected personalities from practice who deal with the issues of intangible cultural heritage and its protection.
