- Course objectives
- The aim of this course is to familiarise students with the Italian morphological system, in particular lexical classes, inflection and word formation. Students will learn to identify lexical forms, their characteristics, use in texts and in practical language.
- Learning outcomes
- By the end of the course, students will have acquired awareness of the main semantic and morphosyntactic features of the various lexical classes. Furthermore, they will be able to apply this knowledge to both the practical use of the Italian language and its theoretical description.
- Syllabus
- - Nouns - Gender and number of nouns - Definiteness: defined/indefinite article, partitive (forms and functions) - Adjectives: general characteristics, classification - Agreement - Pronouns: characteristics and types - Verbs - Closed lexical classes - Word formation rules: derivation and composition Seminars held by guest lecturers are also to be included in the course content: (a) Online and in-presence seminars on Mondays from 16:00 to 18:00. Minimum attendance: 80%. Alternatively, substitute study materials must be agreed with the lecturer in order to pass the final exam. (b) Programme lectures. Activities common to the whole degree programme (therefore not necessarily about linguistics). On these occasions, other activities will be suspended. Activities already on the calendar: - 30.09 (all day, room 343) and 01.10 (morning, deanery meeting room, to be confirmed) Conference "Developing new languages in migration contexts - 13 October 16:00-18:00 and Tuesday 14 October 16:00-18:00 (deanery meeting room), prof. Matteo Di Figlia (University of Palermo) Seminars on ‘Il fascismo italiano: 1919-1943’ (Teaching materials will be provided prior to the seminars) The full calendar of type (a) and type (b) activities will be communicated at the beginning of the semester.

- Teaching methods
- Lectures: definition and discussion of notions and terminology; specific examples. Labs: study groups and in-class presentations. Exercises on all the phenomena covered.
- Assessment methods
- Written exam (open questions and exercises on the course's contents). Both the development of the course's contents and the acquisition of the Italian language, according to the level, will be evaluated. 80% attendance is required to take the written test; alternatively, the study of additional material to compensate for non-attendance must be agreed in advance.
