- Abstract
- The main aim of this course is to familiarise students with morphosyntax (nouns and verbs) and the structure of sentences and utterances in Italian. This main course is complemented by a parallel seminar course, which will offer an overview of the different varieties that populate the Italian linguistic space through in-depth studies of dialectal and variety morphosyntax issues.
- Learning outcomes
- Students will learn to: recognise verbal and nominal forms and understand their function in a sentence; identify the argument structure of verbs and the different types of (in)transitivity; recognise the different options of diathesis; recognise different types of sentences in a text and their relationship.
- Key topics
- Verbs: forms and functions. Argument structure. Syntactic functions. Transitivity, unergativity, and unaccusativity. Perfective and passive auxiliaries. Semantic roles. Types of sentences and relationships between sentences.

- Method of verifying learning outcomes and course completion requirements
- Written exam (open questions and exercises on the course's contents). Both the development of the course's contents and the acquisition of the Italian language, according to the level, will be evaluated. 80% attendance is required to take the written test; alternatively, the study of additional material to compensate for non-attendance must be agreed in advance.
