- Approaches, practices, and methods used in teaching
Homework: learning new vocabulary (active and passive vocabulary, grammatical concepts, synonyms/antonyms—all available in Elf; overall preparation for translating a text so that the final translation is cohesive and coherent)
The course is conducted in a seminar format: reading the text, explanation of new grammatical phenomena, explanation of new sentence structures.
Ongoing vocabulary tests, see below.
Reading a previously unknown text without prior preparation of new vocabulary and grammatical phenomena. Texts are selected based on current topics or student interest; they cover various genres of written language (newspaper articles, fiction, and specialized texts).
- Method of verifying learning outcomes and course completion requirements
- Regular vocabulary tests during class. Students must score at least 70% on the tests (scores from different tests may be combined). Meeting the passing threshold on the tests is required to advance to the final exam.
- Final written test. A passing score of 70% is required; the test focuses on active vocabulary.
- Oral reading exam. Students who pass the final test are eligible to take this exam. The student receives a text and is given time to prepare a selected passage. The student then reads the passage and explains the grammatical phenomena it contains.
