- Course objectives
- The course is an introduction into the subject of Latin literature of the Bohemian Middle Ages from its beginnings to the end of the 13th century.
- Learning outcomes
- At the end of the course, students will be able to describe the history of medieval Latin literature in Bohemia up until the 13th century; to explain the influences of the classical tradition on medieval literature; to describe connections of the Latin literature in Bohemia in this period with the development of the Latin literature in Europe, as well as with the contemporary Old Czech literature; to evaluate the most significant representatives of particular genres of Latin literature in Bohemia in this period; to analyze language and style of selected treatises.

- 1. Medieval Latin literature in Bohemia (definition, content, development of research).
- 2.-3. Characteristics of Medieval Latin literature.
- 4.-5. Development of Bohemian Latin literature until the end of the 13th century: Hagiography (Wenceslas and other legends).
- 6.-7. Historiography (Cosmas).
- 8. Religious lyric poetry (hymns, sequences, tropes, cantilenas).
- 9. "Drama".
- 10.-11. Sermons.
- 12.-13. Diplomatics and rhetoric (charters, epistolography, formularies, dictamina).
