Course objectives
The course goal is to understand lexicology as a field of study and to use its terminology in analysis of Vietnamese language; practical aspect of the course comprise training analysis of basic types and structure of words in Vietnamese language including informations about their origin. The course Lexicology of Vietnamese language is a fundamental theoretical profile core course of the study programme Vietnamese Studies. Content of this course and acquired knowledge will be also a part of the Final State Examination.
Learning outcomes
1) At the end of this course the student will be able:
- to identify the types of Vietnamese words.
- to explain the structure of Vietnamese words;
2) At the end of the course, students will
- have basic theoretical knowledge of general lexicology and lexicography;
- know theory of syllable, morpheme and word in Vietnamese;
- know etymology of common part of the lexicon;
- know basic idiomatic expressions and their possible origin;
- orientate themselves in traditional and modern dictionaries.
Syllabus
  • 1. General introduction into lexicology (basic concepts)
  • 2. Classification of Vietnamese and its general characteristics from the point of view of lexicology
  • 3. Tiếng – relation of a syllable, morpheme and word
  • 4. Word composition and word creation
  • 5. Lexical and syntactical description of language – a question of word classes
  • 6. Etymology and taking over foreign lexical units – from Chinese, Austronese languages, French etc.
  • 7. Phraseology, thành ngữ (chéngyǔ) – their origin in Chinese, literary texts and folk tradition
  • 8. Lexicography – traditional Vietnamese vocabularies and encyclopaedia
  • 9. Lexicography – pre-modern European vocabularies of Vietnamese
  • 10. Lexicography – modern Vietnamese dictionaries
  • 11. Lexicography – descriptions and dictionaries of minority languages of Vietnam

lectures and practical exercises with analyses
Assessment methods
Written brief tests at the beginning of every lecture - 50 % of correct answers from all brief tests (including tests from missed classes) is needed to pass for final written examination. Then at least 80 % of correct answers from final written examination is needed to pass the course. Note: also at least 75% of correct answers from all brief tests is enough (= with no required level of results from final written examination) to pass the course.
