- Course objectives
- The main aim of the course is to read and interpret selected parts of Platos Apologia. Students will learn how to deal with an original text (translation, commentary and analysis).
- Syllabus
- 1. Plato: life and work.
- 2. Platos philosophy.
- 3. Introduction to reading Plato.
- 4.-12. Reading and interpretation of selected parts of the text (approximately two pages of the text of Teubner edition are interpreted during every lesson): the appropriate translation of Greek original text to Czech (differences between the word-for-word and the appropriate translation, looking for adequate expressions in Czech for different Greek syntactic constructions), grammatical analysis of the text (morphology, syntax: emphasis on understanding of different syntactical phenomena and looking for their semantically adequate alternative constructions), social and cultural context.

- Active participation during the lessons. Written test and oral exam at the end of the semester. Students are supposed to prove a very good uderstanding of a selected part of the text by translating and interpreting it.
