Course objectives
The main aim of the lecture is to acquire skills in reading and comprehension of Old Czech texts and to specify the period in which they had originated. The theoretical part is focused especially on phonological and morphological development of Czech (ie from the 11th century to the second third of the 18th century). It also deals with Old Czech syntax, orthography and punctuation. The practical part is focused on reading, transcription and analysis of Old Czech texts from various periods. The texts are selected to represent the individual types of orthography used in Old Czech.

  • Searching in Old Czech dictionaries.
  • Transliteration and transcription.
  • Verbal system in Old Czech.
  • System of Old Czech declension.
  • Development of the phonological system from the 10th century to the present day.
  • The systems of Czech orthography.

Assessment methods
The course consists of explanations and work with texts. Students are expected to submit assignments in an electronic form (using the e-learning system) and to gain at least 80 % of points. The exam is in written form, if necessary, oral testing is used.
