Course objectives
An overview of the history of Polish literature from 1740 till 1864 - Age of Enlightement (Classicism, Sentimentalism, Rococo) and Romanticism.The course contains information about the period, the literary epochs, trends, schools and authors, with an analysis of genres and specific works and also leads toward a knowledge of written forms of expression within the given issues. Main aims of the course are:
- to understand development of the Polish literature of the Classicism, Sentimentalism and Romanticism
- to understand the most prominent representatives of the Polish literature of that period
- to understand Polish literature as an integrative part of the building the national consciousness
- to become familiar with an essential amount of scientific literature and its methods - to apply acquired knowledge and skills on the creation of own scientific texts.

  • 3. Polish theater and drama in the Age of Enlightenment & Ideologists of the Polish Enlightenment
  • 4. Poetics of Polish Rococo and Sentimentalism
  • 5. The legacy of the Polish Enlightenment & Polish literature in the years 1795 to 1830 & The way to the romantic turn in Polish literature
  • 6. Romantic accent on folklore in the works of Adam Mickiewicz
  • 7. Romantic drama and theater
  • 8. Romantic topoi and the concept of space & The November Uprising and the Great Emigration in the works of Polish romantic bards Adam Mickiewicz and Juliusz Słowacki
  • 9. Conservative tendencies in Polish Romanticism: revolution and messianism in the works of Zygmunt Krasińského & The Fourth Bard Cyprian Kamil Norwid

Teaching methods
Lectures are combined with seminar discussions.
Assessment methods
Attendance (3 absences per semester are allowed), compulsory reading and seminar paper are required. Completion: written (40 %) and oral (40 %) exam, seminar paper (20 %).
