Course objectives
An overview of the history of Polish literature from 1864 till 1918 (positivism and neo-romanticism). The course contains information about the period, the literary epochs, trends, schools and authors, with an analysis of genres and specific works and also leads toward a knowledge of written forms of expression within the given issues. Main aims of the course are: - to understand development of the Polish literature of the positivist and neo-romanticism period - to understand the most prominent representatives of the Polish literature of that period - to understand Polish literature as an integrative part of the building the national consciousness - to become familiar with an essential amount of scientific literature and its methods - to apply acquired knowledge and skills on the creation of own scientific texts.

  • 1. Age of Enlightenment in Poland. Important institutions.
  • 2. Polish theatre and drama. Notable authors (Bohomolec, Bogusławski, Czartoryski, Zabłocki, Niemcewicz).
  • 3. Poetry (works of Adam Naruszewicz, Stanisław Trembecki and Ignacy Krasicki).
  • 4. Late Enlightenment. Preromanticism.
  • 5. Roots of Polish Romanticism. Polish Romanticism and two basic distinct periods: 1820-1832, and 1832-1864.
  • 6.-8. "Mighty Four" of Polish Romantics: Adam Mickiewicz, Juliusz Słowacki, Zygmunt Krasiński a Cyprian Kamil Norwid.
  • 9. Dramatic texts of Polish Romanticism.
  • 10. Prose of Polish Romanticism. Józef Korzeniowski. Józef Ignacy Kraszewski. Narrative genres of Polish Romanticism. Specifics of Polish "gawęda". Literary scholarship, literary criticism. Development of literary genres.

Attendance (3 absences per semester are allowed), compulsory reading and presentation of seminar paper are required. Completion: written exam, revision of compulsory reading.
