- Course objectives
- The course – seminar deals with the basic literature about the art from antiquity into early modern times. It shows the origin of the art history in the age of humanism and of enlightenment and seeks to describe and define the basic „schools“ of art history until 1945.
- Learning outcomes
- The students get up the basic outline of art history´s history. They will aquired the knowledge of the major trends and personalities that shaped reflection of visual culture in its historical perspective. The students also assumed the contextual and methodological background of the discipline.
- Syllabus
- 1. The antiquity: rhetoric, ekfrasis, art history as a history of inovations. & 2. Middle ages I – art and hagiography, Cennino Cennini, the topographical writings. & 3. Renaissance and new idea of „art“ : Ghiberti, Landino, Alberti, "ars" and Leonardo da Vinci. & 4. The art history as a history of artists ("vite"): Giorgio Vasari (1511-1574) and his followers. & 5. Reflexion of art in Baroque . & 6. The art history as a history of an ideals: Johann Joachim Winckelmann.& 7. The enlightenment in Rance and at critics: Diderot, . & 8. Karl Friedrich von Rumohr: the founder of art history, K. G. Waagen, J. D. Passavant and romanticism. & 9. School of Berlin: the style, two art histories: formal-style and spirit of history. & 10. Connoisseurschip and museums in the 19th c. & 12. The methodical schools: Heinrich Wölfflin, Henri Focillon& 11. School of Vienna: Eitelberger, Thausing, Wickhoff, Riegl, Dvořák, von Schlosser.& 12. - Seminar, reading of the texts, discussion.
- Assessment methods
- For succesful passing through the course it is necessary: - final reflexion of the text as essay - no absence without proper excuse - active participaton on the course - that means discussion the text for each lesson. Unsatisfactory fulfilment of the obligation will be the reason of non-evaluation of the course
