Course objectives
The aim of the course is to present the current state of Social Pedagogy as one of pedagogical disciplines and to offer basic orientation in various topics Social Pedagogy deals with. First, students are introduced in the establishment of Social Pedagogy in a historical survey and its focus and research objective. Then, students are introduced in the issues of social enviroment and education, social behaviour. Discussions about selected topics connected with possibilities of the influence of social environment are crucial to the course. The course should lead to presenting possible approaches to solutions of social problems from the point of view of engaged education. Students are able to specify the subject of Social Pedagogy upon completion of the course.
Learning outcomes
Students are able:
- to summarize different approaches to the content of social pedagogy
to identify and compare the differences of its concept in different European countries
to analyze the relationship of education and the environment
to define and describe the process of socialization
to describe features of functional and dysfunctional education.

  • Course outline: 1. Social Pedagogy (definition, objectives, aims, importance of Social Pedagogy, its relation to other disciplines, and Social Pedagogy in practice).
  • 2. Social pedagogy and its conception in different countries.
  • 3. The process of socialization.
  • 4. Social behaviour and its deviations. Theory of social norms and deviations.
  • 5. Social prevention and education.
  • 6. Social environment and its influence on education.

Teaching methods
lectures and seminars, class discussion, working with case reports, seminar paper, reading.
Assessment methods
A combination of lectures, exercises and self-study. E-learning support to the course in the ELF. Course evaluation – final written/oral exam, submission of a seminar thesis and continuous written test. The focus of seminar thesis is on an individual client with a problem of socialization. Detailed information will be placed on the ELf support.
