- Course objectives
- Basic presentation of South Slavic languages, their phonetics and phonology, grammar, vocabulary and process of standardization. South Slavic area has gone through an interesting century in terms of development to 7 standardized languages. Lectures will present students with differences between these languages and will also focus on similarities and how historical events influenced their standardization.
- Learning outcomes
- At the end of this course students will be able to demonstrate the knowledge of South Slavic languages, have a broader and more solid understanding of key aspects of linguistics and comparative study of Slavic languages, and will be familiar with South Slavic grammar. Students of the Croatian language will get acquainted with the Serbian Cyrillic alphabet, thanks to which they will be able to read Serbian texts, i.e. practically texts in the same language, only written in a different graphic system.

- 3. Grammar picture of North-Western subgroup of South Slavic languages (Serbo-Croatian, Slovenian language).
- 4. Grammar picture of South-Eastern subgroup of South Slavic languages (Bulgarian, Macedonian language).
- 5. Lexical picture of South Slavic languages.
- 6. Old Church Slavonic, South Slavic languages in the Middle Ages and in pre-standard era.
- 7. Standardization processes in South Slavic area in 19th century - Croatian and Serbian language.

- To successfully complete this course, students of the Croatian specialization must master the Serbian Cyrillic. This competence will be tested by reading a selected Serbian text written in Cyrillic. This reading will be part of the oral exam.
