Course objectives
Latin for the Non-latinists III follows the course Latin for the Non-latinists II and is aimed to continue learning basic Latin grammar.
Learning outcomes
At the end of the course students will be able to:
- reproduce by heart nominal and verbal paradigms studied in the course (see syllabus of the course);
- explain grammatical rules studied in the course;
- describe the structure and function of selected Latin clauses;
- translate a simple coherent Latin text into Czech.
Syllabus
  • This course provides an overview of the following grammatical categories:
  • Morphology:
  • - adjective grading;
  • - subjunctives;
  • - participles;
  • - supine.
  • Syntax:
  • - subordinate clauses of purpose, conditional, cum historicum;
  • - participle constructions;
  • - periphrastic conjugation;
  • - ablative absolute;
  • - uses of nominative in subordinate clauses.

Teaching methods
Planned learning activities and teaching methods consist of lectures, practice (translation and grammar exercises). Regular class attendance and preparatory homeworks are recommended.
Assessment methods
A requirement for granting the colloquium is the timely completion of a continuous assignment in the form of an answer sheet in IS MU and the successful completion of a written test verifying knowledge of the grammar covered (at least 70%). Active class participation is not required but is strongly recommended.
