Course objectives
The aim of the course is systematization on deepening of the knowledge from the field of Russian morphology.
Learning outcomes
After finishing the course, the student should be able:
- to describe morphological system of contemporary Russian and to sum up its main features;
- to apply gained knowledge in practical language communication;
- to manage theoretical basics of morphology;
- to conjugate and to decline different types of verbs, nouns, adjectives, pronouns, numerals;
- to compare adjectives and adverbs;
- to confront and to analyse the differences of Russian Czech morphological systems.
Syllabus
  • 1. Morphology and its key terms. Morphological paradigms, variants. Grammar category, grammar form, grammar meaning. Russian and Czech morphological schools: sameness and differences.
  • 2. Parts of speech. Mutual transitions of parts of speech.
  • 3. Nouns, their classification. Nouns declination in Russian, Principles of paradigmatic classification. Nouns declinational types in Russian in comparison to the Czech language. Proper names and their declination. Indeclinable nouns. Abbreviations, their gender, number, declination. Ways of nouns formation in Russian.
  • 4. Adjectives—general characteristics. Semantical types of adjectives. Paradigmatic system. Long and short forms of adjectives. Accentological types of short adjectives. Comparative and superlative forms of adjectives—ways of formation and use. Adjective formation in Russian.
  • 5. Pronouns—general characteristics. Kinds of pronouns and their grammatical specifics.
  • 6. Numerals—kinds of numerals and their grammatical meaning. Cardinal numerals—their declination, morphological specifics and use. Constructions with numerals. Distributive numerals. Expressing of approximation. Fractions. Collective numerals. Ordinal numbers.
  • 7. Verb—its grammar meanings. The system of verbal forms. Accent and spelling of verbs. Transitive and intransitive verbs. Reflexive verbs. Verb aspect. Forming aspectual opposites. Two-aspects verbs. Multiple verbs. Verbs of motion. Specific features of verbal aspect use in Russian and in Czech. Verbal voice. Grammatical category of verbal mood. Indicative mood. Formation and specific features of imperative forms use. Formation and use of conditional mood forms. Grammatical category of tense: formation and use of present, past and future tenses forms. Use of temporary verbs with secondary meaning. Grammatical category of person and number.
  • 8. Attributive forms of verbs: verbal adjectives.
  • 9. Attributive forms of verbs: transgressive.
  • 10. Inflexible forms of verbs: infinitive, verbal nouns. Verb formation.
  • 11. Inflexible parts of speech: adverbs.
  • 12. Inflexible parts of speech: prepositions.
  • 13. Inflexible parts of speech: conjunctions, particles, interjections.

Teaching methods
Theoretical preparations, lectures, seminars.
Assessment methods
The exam consists of practical tasks for which it is possible to find out the theoretical preparation. I focus on practical tasks focused on the translation, creation and selection of correct morphological shapes + morphemic analysis. On the exam, the student will receive several terms; their meaning will need to be explained and examples given.
