- Course objectives
- Studies of structures of word phrases and sentences, processes of formation of predication and learning principles and methods of analysis of syntactic units and texts. Studies of syntactic units requires a range of approaches (formal, grammatical, logical, semantic, structural-semantic).
- Learning outcomes
- After completing the course the student will be able to theoretically and practically use the Ukrainian syntax.
- Syllabus
- Subject and aims of syntax. Content of the subject: lectures on elementary probles of syntactic structures of various types of sentences and their communicative functions.
- Relation of syntax to other linguistic subjects (morphology and lexicology. Elementary syntactic units: word phrase, clause, sentence.
- Types of word phrases, means of connecting words in word phrases.
- Syntactic relations and formal means of their expression. Concept of valency and intention.
- Clause as an elementary communicative and syntactic unit. Classification of clauses according to communicative intention and according to inner structure. Elementary types of a simple clause.
- Problems of sentence constituents. Expression without status of sentence constituent.
- Word order and topical structure analysis.
- One-constituent clause.
- Incomplete clause. Elipsis.
- General features of multiple-constituent sentence. Differential features of coordinate constituents of a sentence and means of their expression. Conditions for separation of sentence constituents.
- General features of parenthesis and similar structures. Features of addressing.
- General features of a sentence. Linguistic means for sentence constitution. Classification of sentences according to various types of view.
- Individual types of subordinate and coordinate sentences. Complex sentence.
- General features of predication. Structure with other predication (direct speech, indirect speech, dialogue, quotation).
- Punctuation.
- Compound sentence with no conjunctions.
- Subordinate sentence with divided and not-divided structures.

- The course has a form of one lecture and one seminar every week. Homework is assigned during the semester. Lecturer´s information They will be given to students during the semester.
