- Course objectives
- The aim of the course is reading and analysing particular play, usually Sophokles's Oidipus King. The analysis consists of following parts: stylistic, literary, cultural and historical. After completing the course the students are able to apply those interpretative criteria on Sophocles` text.
- Syllabus
- 1. Introduction into the ancient drama.
- 2. Literary works of Sophocles.
- 3. Metre of Sophocles` plays.
- 4. Oedipus in the ancient literature.
- 5. Oedipus in modern literatures.
- In each lesson: Reading and interpretation of selected parts of the text (approximately two pages of the text of Teubner edition per lesson) - analysis of specific morphological, syntactic, lexical and stylistic phenomena, comments of the teacher and papers of the students.

- Seminars 1½ hours per week. Homeworks: reading discussed texts.

- Active participation during the class discussions and the class presentation. Oral examination: the student proves his/her understanding of the text by interpreting and translating a selected part of the text.
