- Course objectives
- Travelling has a long tradition in the Czech countries. Origins of the Czech expeditions beyond the homeland borders fall up into the Middle Ages. In the course of the centuries, they visited not only the particular European countries, but also the countries of Asia, Africa or America. Many of them left witness of their travels and experiences in a written form. This one-semestral course will inform students about these personalities, about motifs of their travels (business, desire for knowledge and adventures, political motifs), about their experience, but also about interpretation of life, cultural practice and conditions in the foreign countries of Europe, Asia, Africa as well as America. The personalities, whose travelling books and notes (mostly within the range from the 13th till the 19th century) will be utilized within the course, are as follows: Oldřich Čech of Furlánsko, Václav Šašek of Bířkov, Martin Kabátník, Zdeněk Brtnický of Valdštejn, Bedřich of Donín, Oldřich Prefát of Vlkanov, Kryštof Harant of Polžice and Bezdružice, Ota of Nostice, Lev Vilém of Kounice, Heřman Četnín of Chudenice, Josef Neumann, Jan Ferdinand Körning, Jindřich Hýzrle of Chody, members of the Society of Jesus.
