• Czech Language with Orientation on Computational Linguistics (programme FF, B-FI)

Course objectives

The course combines excursions to specialized linguistic institutions and a series of linguistic lectures by Czech experts and by experts from abroad focusing (not only) on corpus and computational language processing. The aim is to enrich standard teaching of computational linguistics and linguistically orientated Czech studies with specific views of the sphere of primary as well as applied linguistic research and to get students acquainted with future possibilities of their specialization in practice. The course is aimed especially at students of the programme “Czech language with the focus on computational linguistics”, yet it is open to all students from the sphere of Czech studies and from other philological study programmes. After the INOVA.CZ project ends (i.e. from the spring term 2015), students will have to participate financially at excursion costs.

Syllabus

• Excursions will be organized especially to the Institute of the Czech National Corpus, Faculty of Arts, Charles University, to various departments of the Institute of the Czech Language, Academy of Sciences, and to companies and institutions in which graduates trained in computational linguistics, Czech studies and other related study programmes can be employed. The series of lectures will focus on topics from theory and practice of corpus and computational language processing, e.g. on building, tagging and using corpuses, on types of disambiguation, on tools for checking orthography and grammar in electronic word- processors, on using morphological analysis in web browsers, on issues of computational translation, on analysis and synthesis of spoken language etc. Some of the lectures will pay attention to “non-computational” linguistics with the focus on Czech studies. Programme of the course will be modified each term, depending e.g. on students suggestions. The excursions will be partly repeated in spring or summer terms (for this reason there is the distinction between parts I and II; completing course I is not a requirement for taking course II). The programme of the series of lectures will be specified at the beginning or during the term. The spring term 2015 will contain e.g. continuing lectures by Mgr. Lukavský (Moravia IT) focused on computational translation, a lecture by Professor Nekula (Regensburg) focused on issues of diglossia in international organizations and companies, a lecture by Ing. Puchrik on creating Clevermaps on the web, at students´ request, a lecture on Esperanto is being prepared etc. Spring term 2015 excursions: Czech Television studio, Brno – Brno branch of Seznam.cz company – press section of the Brno Zoo.

• Literatura bude studentům zadávána aktuálně v relaci k tématům přednáškového cyklu a zaměření navštívených lingvistických pracovišť.

Teaching methods

The focus will be on active participation of students, with regard to the issues dealt with. Students will be encouraged to make scholarly preparations for lectures and excursions, to participate in discussions and to utilize the acquired knowledge.

Assessment methods

To complete the course successfully, it is necessary to participate actively in two of the excursions and in two of the lectures and to submit assignments relating to those activities.
