Course objectives
This literary-historical course in the Bachelor s degree is outlined as a complementation of a lecture on 19th century Czech literature. The sessions are devoted to authors and problems of Czech literature in a comparative perspective, in relation to Czech literature of different periods as well as in relation to other literatures, i.e. from Josef Dobrovský s generation to a coming of Czech modern movement generation. Tendencies and works which were less influent or neglected for various reasons are also mentioned. Sessions are based on topics of students essays which have both encyclopedic and interpretative character; session include explication and discussions.
At the end of the course students should be able to: make the selection of primary sources in convenient publications (critical ones) and the orientation in secondary sources as well as their independent work. At the end of the course students should be able to: - enlarge their knowledge of issues concerning the 19th century of Czech literature;
- are familiar with specialized literature and methodology; - check their interpretative skills;
- are familiar with basic findings and methodological procedures of related disciplines;
- are able to apply acquired knowledge and skills when creating scientific texts.
Syllabus
  • dr. Urválková:
  • This course is based on the interpretations of selected Czech works of poetry, fiction and drama written at the end of the 18th century and throughout the 19th century. Literary-theoretical knowledge and skills will be deepened and used to better comprehension of the literary-historical background in the 19th century. Special attention will be paid to issues of transformation of various genres and dominant literary styles and tendencies; period literary critical receptions will be also mentioned. Reflections of literature on the subject are part of the course.
  • dr. Fránek:
  • This seminary is focused on basic developement tendencies in the 19th century Czech literature - from the beginnings of the "Revival Period" untill 1880s (with regard to european context). The lecture will be based on analysis of particular works typical for certain periods.Topics of this course are following: intoduction into problematics and secondary literature, beginnings of the "Revival Period" and an argument about its character, delimitation of trends classicism, pre-romantism, romanticism, biedermeier and identification of their influences in poetry, prose and drama, the Máj generation, the Lumír and Ruch model, features of realism in prose and drama of the second half of the 19th century. In this seminar will be discussed cultural-historical context in general and also acceptance of studied works by people of those times.
  • Mgr. Vokřínek:
  • The content of this seminary will be the interpretation of significant works of literature from the beginnings of the "Revival Period" untill 1880s, with emphasis on the aspect of the comparison, allowing development uderstand in the historico-literary causal contexts. Will also take account of the cultural context of the European literature.

Teaching methods
Seminars, 1½ hours per week; a reading of the disscus topic, a short oral presentation of reports, a written summary of the reports; a collective interpretation, class discussion, e-learning support.
Assessment methods
Assesment: essay and active participation in the discussions. Exam will be based on interpretation of historical development of particular period (to the extent of the textbook Lehár, Jan a kol.: Česká literatura od počátků k dnešku), knowledge of recommended primary literature and analyses of the works read by student.

Information on completion of the course: Seminář souvisí s přednáškou Česká literatura 19. století, celý kurs je uzavřen zkouškou. Podmínkou přístupu ke zkoušce je splnění podmínek pro uzavření semináře.
The course is taught annually.
General note: V jarním semestru 2011 je seminář vypsán pouze pro studenty, kteří jsou ve vyšších ročnících studia a opakují ho nebo si ho nemohli zapsat v minulosti z důvodu zahraniční stáže v rámci studia na MU.
Credit evaluation note: Zápočet, 2 kr., určeno výhradně pro zahraniční studenty.
