Course objectives
The implementation of information services provided by librarians and information staff is, like other activities, limited by legal norms that impose certain rights and obligations on them. Awareness of these frameworks for their work is essential. The aim of the course is not to provide a comprehensive overview of legal regulations, but to familiarize students with the basic rules for their practice and the legal reasons for solving the usual situations in providing information services with a focus on those defined in the Library Act.
At the end of the course the student will focus on selected legislative restrictions on information, especially in the field of copyright, and will be able to solve simple legal problems in library and information practice.
Learning outcomes
Student will be able to:
- define basic legal concepts and principles in the Czech environment;
- search legal sources and apply their content to simple legal problems in practice;
- justify the legal reason for typical activities in information practice (eg why the library can not send the user a digitized publication within e-presence);
- identify the situation in the information work where consultation with the lawyer is necessary.
