PSA_0SZ Comprehensive Examination
Preconditions for approaching the Master’s state examination are to submit Master’s thesis, to submit case study and to obtain relevant number of credits. During the second cycle of study one has to gain 120 credits in total (110 credits type A and 10 B credits).

Course objectives
Master’s State Examination consists of two parts: Master’s thesis defence and oral part. Student is accomplishing the oral part of the Master’s state examination from the subjects:
- general subject areas of psychology (general psychology, psychology of personality and social psychology) and methodology
- psychodiagnostics
- *clinical psychology
*psychology of work, organization and management
*counseling psychology
(From disciplines marked by * student chooses just one.)
A part of the oral Master’s state examination is a discussion about the case study.
Upon completion of this course, students have demonstrated their ability to appraise and evaluate theoretical approaches in their given field of study. They are able to compare and contrast various scholarly approaches. They have a profound knowledge of the discipline including the ability to implement the various skills relating to the specific field of study.
Syllabus
  • COGNITIVE PSYCHOLOGY, EMOTION, MOTIVATION AND ACTION, PSYCHOLOGY OF PERSONALITY, SOCIAL PSYCHOLOGY AND METHODOLOGY – set of the themes:
  • 1. Subject matter and research methods of cognitive psychology - Historical roots of cognitive psychology. The cognitive revolution in psychology. Areas of research in cognitive psychology. Methods of research in cognitive psychology. Cognitive science, cognitive neuroscience and cognitive neuropsychology.
  • 2. Perception Sensation vs. Perception - Perceptual organization, the theory of Gestalt psychology. Perceptual constants. The perception of the size, depth and movement. Color perception. The theories of perception: constructivist theory, the theory of direct perception, integrating theory. Object recognition. Disorders of perception.
  • 3. Attention - Attention and consciousness. Pre-conscious information processing; priming. Automatic processes. Habituation. Focused attention. Signal detection. Theories of attention. Attention deficit disorder.
  • 4. Memory - Methods of memory research. Traditional models of memory, memory structure. Working memory model. Connectionist models. Memory processes: encoding, storage, retreiving. Theories of long-term memory. Episodic and semantic memory. Implicit memory and learning. Theories of forgetting and amnesia. Extraordinary memory capabilities. Autobiographical memory, flashbulb memories, witness testimony.
  • 5. Mental representation - Definition of mental representation. Propositions and images. Schemas. The dual coding hypothesis. The proposition hypothesis. Models of mental representation. Mental manipulation of images. Concepts and categories, the categorization process. Theories of categorization. Production and production system. Connectionist models.
  • 6. Language and Speech - Language conceps. The perception of speech. Theories of word recognition. Semantics and syntax. Understanding the language: the processing of sentences, discourse, narratives. Language acquisition, language development. Nature versus nurture in language acquistion. Speech production. Basic processes in reading and writing. Language and thought.
  • 7. Thinking, problem solving, creativity - Reasoning and deduction. The theory of reasoning. Inductive reasoning. Heuristics and biases. Problem solving. Types of problems, problem-solving process. Gestalt psychology contribution to problem solving theories. The theory of problem space. The role of knowledge in problem solving, expert decision-making. Creativity - general approaches to creativity. Discoveries. Factors of creativity.
  • 8. Cognitive development, intelligence - General principles of cognitive development. Maturation and environmental factors. Cognitive development in adulthood. Approaches to intelligence, measurement of intelligence. Theories of intelligence. Artificial intelligence.
  • 9. Motivation - Motivation as a process. View of contemporary psychology to issues of behavior motivation. Basic theories of motivation and their comparison. Basic concepts of motivation (reflex, instinct, instinct, homeostasis, motivation, motiv) in the context of relevant theories. Achievement motivation. Field theory of Kurt Lewin, attribution model, the Zeigarnikova effect, the flow - phenomenon. The survival of the individual and the species. Regulation of food and fluids intake. Sexual and parental motives. Frustration. Strategies for coping with frustration. Theories related to the issue of frustration. Characteristics of volitional processes. Properties of the will. The relationship of motivation and emotion.
  • 10. Emotion - Basic approaches to the study of emotion. Classical and modern theories of emotions. Basic theories of emotions and their comparison. Physiological basis of emotion. Psychophysiological indicators of emotions. Possibilities of using instrumental methods for recording psychophysiological correlates of emotion. Basic difficulties in emotion research. Subject matter and methods in emotions study. Classification of emotions in terms of power and time curve, and ontogenetic and phylogenetic terms. Current genesis of emotions.
  • 11. Basic approaches to personality - psychoanalysis, behaviorism, humanistic psychology, cognitive psychology and theories of social learning.
  • 12. Social cognition - Associationist and constructivist models of social cognition. Scheme of processes of social perception. Concept of social stereotype (auto and hetero-stereotype). Interpretation of social reality - theory of attribution (Heider, Weiner, Fiske, Taylor, Ross).
  • 13. Social processes - Basic characteristics of the small group. Group development, group dynamics. Leadership styles. Social influence. Macrosocial processes. Crowd, depersonalization. Introduction to the intercultural psychology (Hofstede). Ethnic relations.
  • 14. Social Communication - Communication process. Syntax, semantics, pragmatics. Verbal, paraverbal end nonverbal communication. Communication axioms (Watzlawick, Bavelas, Haley, Jackson). Determinants of the efficient communication, assertivity.
  • 15. Attitudes and Attitude Change - Attitude theory. Attitudes measurement (Likert, Thurstone, Guttmann, Bogardus, Osgood). Relationship between attitudes and a behaviour (LaPière, Fishbein, Ajzen, Madden). Attitude change. Cognitive disonance theory (Festinger), Balance theory (Heider). Conformity and obedience to an authority (Asch, Milgram). Theory of persuasion.
  • 16. The issue of scientific knowledge - The paths of knowledge. Science as an objective, systematic, critical, controllable, reproducible knowledge. Breakdown of research into psychology by target and research design. Objectives of research in psychology - description, prediction, explanation. Course of scientific work, basic concepts - theory, hypothesis, construct, operationalization, variable. Basic research designs - experiment, quasi-experiment, correlation studies. Specific research strategies, longitudinal and cross-sectional research.
  • 17. Problems of measurement in psychology - Indirect measurement of constructs, validity and reliability of tools. Validity of research - validity of statistical procedures, construct validity, external and internal validity. Breakdown of variables by their role in research.
  • 18. Qualitative and quantitative data, types of scales - Descriptive and inductive statistics. Falsification principle, hypothesis testing, zero hypothesis position in the hypothesis testing process, error type I and II.
  • 19. Research sample - Population and sample set. Sampling frame. Sampling techniques. Representativeness. Probability and non-probabilty sampling. Sample size.
  • 20. Causal Interpretation of Relationships, Mill's Canons of Induction - Experiment versus correlation study. Types of experimental designs according to the method of manipulation with independent variables. Variations of single-factorial and multifactorial experiments. Sources of risks to internal validity.
  • 21. Inter-subject experiment - Randomizing and comparing. Design of control groups and conditions in psychological research.
  • 22. Within-subject experiment - Order effect, progressive effect, transfer effect. Counterbalancing - complete and partial balancing, reverse balancing and blocking.
  • 23. Quasi-experiment - Design with non-equivalent control group, multiple time series plans. Specifics of internal validity threat.
  • 24. Correlation studies - Restriction of the conclusions of correlation studies - Types of bias in correlation research - false correlation, developmental sequence, missing middle member, dual cause.
  • 25. Ethical aspects of research in psychology - Fraud issues, informed consent, anonymity, risk of damage, debriefing, scientific benefit of the study. Scientific scams - fuzzy and distorted data, plagiarism.
  • 26. Research project. Structure of the research project - title, theoretical background, questions and hypotheses, method, discussion, quote sources.
  • 27. The difference between everyday and scientific knowledge - Quantitative versus qualitative approach to research - differences in philosophical bases (objectivity, recognizability of reality), focus (idiographic, nomotetic), goals (verification, understanding), basic approach (deductive, inductive), role of the researcher, sampling method, level of standardization (validity and reliability), etc. Comparison of quantitative and qualitative methods in scientific research.
  • 28. Research objectives and circumstances requiring choice of qualitative research design - Types of qualitative approaches. Data collection methods: participatory and nonparticipatory methods, archival methods. Features of qualitative methods. Principles of transciption.
  • 29. Symbolic interactionism and related approaches. Pragmatism, realism, constructivism. Ethnomethodology.
  • 30. Basics and methods of discourse analysis, Foucault tradition and discourse psychology, limitation of obtained results.
  • 31. An grounded theory. Procedures and principles of grounded theory. Types of encoding (open, axial, and selective).
  • 32. Phenomenology and phenomenological approach to research. Interpretative phenomenological analysis. Objectives and procedures of phenomenological analysis, important concepts (insider perspective).
  • 33. Case and multi-case studies in scientific research. Types of case studies, their problems and limitations.

The Master Degree State Examination (Finals) consists of subjects, which are covered during respective courses in previous study.

Assessment methods
Master’s State Examination consists of two separately graded parts: Master’s thesis defence and oral part. Student is accomplishing the oral part of Master’s state examination from the subjects:
- general subject areas of psychology (general psychology, psychology of personality and social psychology) and methodology
- psychodiagnostics
- *clinical psychology
*psychology of organization and management
*counseling psychology
(From disciplines marked by * student chooses just one.)
A part of the oral Master’s state examination is a discussion about the case study.
For passing the Master’s state examination is essential to successfully master all of its parts. Total outcome of the State examination is evaluated with one of the grades in accordance with gradind scheme set in art. 17 par. 1 of Study and examination regulations MU.
