Course objectives

Phonological and morphological analysis of Czech texts is the issue of Seminar. The seminar is focused on reconstruction of the phonological and morphological development of Czech during the thousand years of its existence. For the work in seminars, transliterated Old Czech texts are used as a material.

Learning outcomes

Having participated in the course, students will be able:
to transcribe a transliterated Old Czech text,
to translate an Old Czech text,
to identify grammatical categories of specific Old Czech inflected forms,
to reconstruct the phonological development of a specific Old Czech word from the Proto-Czech beginnings to the present day (including the main territorially-conditioned varieties),
- to reconstruct the morphological development of a specific Old Czech word from the Proto-Czech beginnings to the present day (including the main territorially-conditioned varieties).

Teaching methods

Teaching methods that are used include: an analysis of Old Czech texts, discussions in classes, homework, reading specific scholarly sources (compulsory sources), drills. Competences, knowledge and skills acquired by students during their preparatory work. Students’ knowledge is checked in classes mainly on an oral basis or by exercises in a written form. An electronic support of teaching in the form of an e-learning course is a part of the course - students are required to fill in exercises continuously during the term.

Assessment methods

A prerequisite for receiving credits are 1. completed e-learning, 2. a written test. Written test is based on an analysis of a piece of a transliterated Old Czech text, consisting of: its transcription, determination of the phonological development of each word, stating the period of the successive changes from Proto-Czech to the present day, identification of all given forms of inflected parts of speech and of an outline of their development from Proto-Czech to the present day. The required limit for successful completing is 75%.

Information on course enrolment limitations: Aktuálně otvírané jen pro příchozí studenty z jiných fakult do mgr. navazujícího studia, kteří dosud neabsolvovali historickou mluvnici češtiny. Předmět je pro tyto studenty podmínkou pro zápis do CJA054 Historická slovotvorba a syntax.
