- Abstract
- The course introduces students to the basics of phonetics and phonology. Students should be able to use the basic concepts when analyzing Czech data.
- Learning outcomes
- At the end of the course, the student is able to:
- use IPA alphabet;
- classify vocalic and consonantal sounds in Czech according to their phonetic features;
- formalize distribution of sounds;
- work with phonological features;
- understand the distinction between underlying and surface phonological structures;
formulate and encode basic phonological processes of Czech;
- formulate basic principles of syllabification and define basic syllable types. - Key topics
1. Grapheme – phoneme, transcription, IPA
2. Phonetics: classification of vowels
3. Phonetics: classification of consonants
4. Segmental phonology: distribution of sounds (bound vs. free, complementary); minimal pairs; phoneme/allophone
5. Segmental phonology: decomposition of sounds into phonological features; natural phonological classes
6. Phonology and morphology (generative model): sound alternations as a result of phonological processes; deep vs. surface phonological structure; phonological rules
7. Prosodic (suprasegmental) phonology
