Introductory course on Analytical Chemistry or an equivalent - Course Enrolment Limitations
- The course is also offered to the students of the fields other than those the course is directly associated with.
- fields of study / plans the course is directly associated with
- Environmental Biomedicine (programme PřF, N-ZPZ)
- Environmental chemistry and toxicology (programme PřF, N-ZPZ)
- Medical Laboratory Technologist (programme LF, B-LABD) (2)
- Environment and Health (programme PřF, N-ZPZ)
- Abstract
- The aim of the course is to acquire practical knowledge and skills in the field of analysis of organic and inorganic pollutants in environmental samples.
- Learning outcomes
- At the end of this course the student will be able to:
- Apply knowledge gained during lectures on environmental analytical chemistry.
- Transfer the theoretical knowledge to the level of practical skills.
- Demonstrate the main techniques of extraction, fractionation, separation and identification suitable for the determination of organic and inorganic substances in environmental samples (air, water, soil, biologial matrices).
- Explore and evaluate the possibilities of different analytical instrumentation.
- Develop the laboratory skills necessary for routine work in the analytical laboratory.
- Understand the principles of good laboratory practice. Evaluate the quality of analytical work. Interpret the obtained experimental data. - Key topics
- 1. Case study - passive air sampling at a student selected site
- 2. Determination of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons in passive air sample (sampled by student)
- 3. Determination of bioavailability of flame retardants from house dust in the gastro-intestinal tract
- 4. PCBs in breast milk samples
- 5. Analysis of pesticides (CUPs) in fruit
- 6. Mass spectrometry
- 7. Determination of essential and toxic elements in human hair
- 8. Determination of total and bioavailable contents of hazardous elements in soils
- 9. Determination of Hg content in fish and shrimp of different trophic levels
- Study resources and literature
- Manuál ke cvičení dostupný v PDF formátu
- Approaches, practices, and methods used in teaching
- Classes are held every week or in blocks as needed. Students will process and analyse samples under the guidance of instructors. Students will prepare a protocol from the obtained data.
- Method of verifying learning outcomes and course completion requirements
- 100% attendance, protocols
- Alternate completion
- To acquire skills, it is necessary to complete all laboratory exercises. If the student is unable to participate, there will be a possibility of substitutions at the end of the semester or individually (contact instructors).
